In January 2008 I was still trying to find time to study all the way through God’s Word! However, I had always gotten stuck somewhere in a history book in the Old Testament learning the long lineage of a great saint or someone would publish a new and wonderful topical Bible study. Once again I found myself abandoning my goal of acquainting myself with every word found in God’s Word.
In the spring of 2008, while facilitating Beth Moore’s study of the fruit of the Spirit, God confirmed to me that it was time to invite others to study God’s Word with me from Genesis 1 through ‘the maps’ as some like to say. And HeartChange is the result of that confirmation. Without the accountability of several other women, I am confident I would still be longing to study through God’s Word.
HeartChange II is a study of God’s Word over a 3-year period. The 2009 Class has just finished studying God’s Word! Those who began in January 2010 have now completed two years, systematically alternating through the Old and New Testaments. We come together once each month to check our HeartChange progress by: 1) reviewing what we have read in God’s Word during the past month, 2) sharing how we have evaluated our attitudes, actions, and relationships against God’s Word, 3) sharing how we have chosen to adjust our attitudes, actions, and relationships to God’s Word, and 4) sharing how we have begun applying God’s Word to our attitudes, actions, and relationships.
This was intended to be a discussion/sharing time for everyone in the class, but studying one—and sometimes two—chapters each day has made it difficult to keep our 2-hour review up to date if we discuss and share as originally intended. Therefore, there is about 90% lecture time and 10% sharing by members of the class. Of course, this has been our first and second classes so everyone has graciously rolled with the learning tide. It has been an incredible adventure for those of us who have been able to press on, having finished December 31, 2011. And it continues to be an incredible adventure for those of us who are able to press on toward the prize of finishing on December 31, 2012. I pray those who have had to drop out for various reasons will be able to begin again at a later date.
Over time we have created a record of God’s faithfulness to us and to those around us, and we have created a record of our adjustments to His Word in our attitudes, actions, and relationships by chronicling His Word to us specifically. When the living God--the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--speaks, it's worth writing down.
We began three classes in January 2009 and one in January 2010.
